Women’s Day in the USA

No Comments on Women’s Day in the USA

In the US there is no special holiday honoring Women (although the first national Women’s Day celebrations were held in 1909 in New York). If a man brings flowers on March 8th, a nice gesture would not be easily understood. I won’t even mention giving chocolates; does anyone still bring them in Poland or elsewhere?

And today, to raise to the occasion a few words on what is statystcally, typical American woman even like? Each one has an average of 30 outfits in the closet. In 1930 she had only 9 of them. She bears her first child around the age of 26.

When it comes to political affiliation, the American women lean towards Democrats (around 52%), comparing to those who prefer Republicans (approximetaly 36%).

Women working full-time in the US earn an average of 78.6% of a man’s salary. And although this is historically a very small difference, the gap is closing slowly. According to The Institute for Women’s Policy Research they will earn the same salary by 2059.

American women usually work in the offices, schools, and as nurses. And since last year they may also apply to work at all combat positions in the military.

In 2015 American women read an average of 14 books, five fewer than an American man .

From my experience, I would describe American women as nice, concrete and very practical.  In the US very  I often see girls dressed in comfortable sweatpants. Several times I saw them even in diners (after all who feel like quickly changing clothes after working out?). I hope never get this habit 🙂 They are also happy to give you an advice, say nicely how are you?, but I think they are quite private.

March is a Women’s History Month (February was Black History Month). In the media and in the agendas of some cultural institutions, events linked to the International Women’s Day occur.

In the musems. A #5womanartists campaign has been launched in order to draw attention to women in arts. Can you name five female artists?

To learn more, we visted  San Francisco Women Artists, a non-profit organization that supports from the end of XIX century, artists from the Bay Area. We actually came when the preparation for a monthly display was happening.

I liked the most colorful miniatures by Karen Coggeshall.

To all my female readers let me say warmly, Happy Women’s Day!

PS. It turned out that in fact in Dean’s work, a event with a “sweet treat” celebrating women (#pledgeforparity) will be held today in the afternoon. Dean also got some Starbucks coffee gift cards  (flowers pattern) for his colleagues. I am sure in San Francisco and bigger US cities many workplaces will host such events, but I but I think most American women will not be disappointed if they do not receive any flowers today. I am however happy that I received a bouquet of roses from Dean!
